How to Start Selling on TikTok Shop

Prepare your catalog, fulfillment, content, and unit economics for a responsible TikTok Shop launch in the United States.

TikTok Shop combines product discovery with in-platform commerce. A useful launch plan needs both sides: content that helps people understand a product and operations that can fulfill the orders the content generates.

This guide is written for a U.S. starting context, with sources reviewed on October 5, 2026. Eligibility, fees, product rules, shipping requirements, and interfaces can change. Check the current official guidance for your account before committing inventory or publishing listings.

Verify eligibility and product fit

Use the official seller setup process and provide accurate business, identity, payment, and warehouse information as requested. Do not assume a product is allowed because it is legal elsewhere or already appears in another store. TikTok Shop publishes prohibited-product rules that can be stricter than a general retail assumption. [Sources: TikTok Shop setup and prohibited products.]

Choose products you can demonstrate accurately and fulfill reliably. A visual result, a clear comparison, or a recognizable use can help content explain value, but popularity alone does not establish viable economics.

Calculate contribution before promoting

Build an order model including product cost, packaging, fulfillment, current platform-related fees, discounts, creator commissions where applicable, refunds, and advertising. Obtain current fees from the official account or documentation; do not budget from an old tutorial.

Set a maximum promotional or acquisition cost based on the remaining contribution. Include the cost of creator samples and production in the broader program budget. A high gross merchandise value can coexist with weak profit.

Prepare a trustworthy catalog

Use accurate titles, specifications, images, variants, dimensions, and required product documentation. Keep the listing consistent with the video and the item that ships. Verify available stock rather than relying on a supplier's optimistic estimate.

State delivery and product claims truthfully. Avoid demonstrations that imply unverified performance or edited results customers cannot reasonably reproduce.

Set up fulfillment and exceptions

Confirm your warehouse, dispatch process, tracking, return handling, and support ownership using current platform requirements. Test the connection to any inventory or commerce system before enabling broad synchronization.

Create an operating checklist for stock changes, invalid addresses, cancellations, damaged items, and delayed shipments. A spike in views can become an operating problem if the business cannot process the resulting orders.

Build content around buying questions

Start with a small set of demonstrations: what the product does, who it suits, how large it is, how it compares with an alternative, and what arrives in the package. Use the actual product and disclose material creator relationships appropriately.

Give each video one purpose and one clear next action. Review comments for unanswered questions and turn recurring questions into better listings and demonstrations. Do not interpret every view as purchase intent.

Learn from a limited launch

Monitor product views, purchases, contribution, cancellations, returns, and fulfillment performance. Compare products and creatives without ignoring differences in audience or promotion. Pause promotion when inventory or service quality cannot support demand.

Treat TikTok Shop as a sales channel with its own operations, not simply an extra social profile. Begin with a small catalog and a fulfillment process you can explain from order placement through return resolution.
