Brief creators around a purchase question, document deliverables and usage, and review claims and disclosure before publishing. Include production and licensing in acquisition economics.
You will create: A creator brief, usage checklist and acceptance scorecard.
See the full advertising learning pathUGC means user-generated content. In advertising, the term also describes commissioned creator videos that resemble everyday product use. Distinguish an actual customer review from paid creator content. Both can be useful; neither should be presented as evidence it does not contain.
Write a brief around the shopper
Specify product and variants, buyer situation, benefit, principal objection, proof shot and CTA. Provide dimensions, care instructions and claims you can substantiate. Ask for a natural demonstration in the creator's own voice instead of an invented personal transformation.
Define the deliverables
- Three opening hooks for one core demonstration.
- One objection-answer segment showing the product clearly.
- One complete vertical edit with readable captions.
- Clean footage and an agreed list of alternate crops where needed.
- A review date, revision scope and a named approver.
For a container set, a useful shot list includes shelf measurement, capacity, opening/closing the lid and cleaning instructions. These answer a purchase question. Decorative lifestyle footage alone may not.
Agree on usage before production
Document organic versus paid usage, platforms, duration, territories, editing permissions and whether creator-account advertising is included. Specify music and other asset rights. Price licensing and renewal beside production. Sending a product or paying for a video does not automatically settle every usage question.
Keep endorsements transparent
For U.S.-facing endorsements, the FTC advises making material brand relationships clear, including payment or free products. Disclosures should be easy to notice with the endorsement; video disclosure should be in the video. Review the official guidance linked below. Use real experience and avoid fabricated reviews, unsupported results or a paid actor presented as an independent customer.
Review the work against the brief
Check product accuracy, claim support, captions, safe areas, disclosure and rights before publishing. Watch without sound on a phone. Does the first moment make the problem recognizable? Does the demonstration answer the concern? Does the CTA match the page?
Measure creative and economics separately
A creator can deliver excellent footage that does not acquire profitable buyers. Track delivery quality separately from ad results. Compare different hooks with a consistent offer and examine orders, new-customer cost, returns and contribution. Include production and licensing in fully loaded acquisition costs over a documented period; do not label a media-only CPA as the entire cost.
A creator brief you can adapt
Product: a fictional travel backpack; approved sample supplied. Buyer situation: a weekend traveler comparing bag capacity and access. Objective: help shoppers decide whether the bag fits their packing needs. Evidence: film the actual items packed and show published dimensions. Objection: will I have to empty the bag to find smaller items? CTA: see the full packing demonstration and specifications.
Required scenes: opening problem, product in use, close view of relevant storage, honest capacity demonstration, and clear next action. Claims to avoid: universal airline approval, guaranteed comfort, or capacities not supported by the product. Tone: helpful and specific, with room for the creator's natural wording. Disclosure: visible and understandable with any sponsored endorsement.
Separate production from distribution
| Agreement item | Question to settle |
|---|---|
| Production fee | What footage, edits and revisions are included? |
| Organic usage | Where can the brand post the content, and for how long? |
| Paid usage | Which platforms, markets and duration are covered? |
| Creator-account ads | Is platform authorization included, and when does it expire? |
| Raw footage and edits | What can the brand re-edit or combine? |
| Renewal | What happens when usage rights end? |
Use a written agreement appropriate to the engagement. Review the selected platform's authorization workflow separately; a content license and an account authorization solve different problems. The FTC disclosure source addresses endorsements, not every contractual licensing detail.
Review the creator's fit before commissioning
Ask for examples of product demonstrations, clear audio and similar filming conditions. If you are buying footage for your own ads, a large follower count may matter less than clarity and credible use. If the creator will distribute to their audience, examine relevant audience evidence and engagement quality as well. Avoid treating either follower count or a low production quote as sufficient proof of fit.
Use an acceptance scorecard
Check factual accuracy, usable sound, readable captions, product visibility, disclosure, rights documentation and matching CTA. Make must-fix issues explicit before production. Give revision notes tied to a purchase question, such as Show the laptop compartment with its dimensions, rather than a vague Make it more premium.
Price the learning, not only the video
Illustrative economics: $300 production plus $150 licensing and $600 media equals $1,050 in defined campaign costs. If the campaign acquires 20 new customers, that is $52.50 per new customer across these costs; media-only CAC is $30. If each first order contributes $40 before these costs, the cohort contributes $800 and is $250 short of covering the defined campaign cost, before overhead. Reuse may improve later economics, but do not assume future customers to make the first result look profitable.

Open the advertising campaign workbook, complete the section for this lesson, and record one decision you will make next. Keep your assumptions beside the evidence so you can update the plan when results arrive.
Questions store owners ask
Does buying a creator video include paid advertising rights?
Do not assume so. Document paid usage, platforms, duration, editing permissions and creator-account authorization separately in the agreement.
Is a commissioned UGC video the same as an independent customer review?
No. Describe and disclose the relationship accurately. A creator can demonstrate a product without pretending to be an unaffiliated customer.
